Product Snapshot

Steel Tooth Tricone Drill Bit for Soft Formation Drilling

Steel Tooth Tricone Drill Bit uses machined steel teeth on three rotating cones to provide efficient crushing, scraping and rolling action during rotary drilling.

Compared with TCI bits, the milled-tooth structure is particularly suitable for softer formations where longer and more aggressive teeth can achieve efficient penetration. Available in multiple IADC configurations, diameters, bearing structures and thread connections, with bit sizes matching our TCI tricone product range.

Key Features

Aggressive cutting for soft formations

Six design advantages behind the Steel Tooth Tricone Drill Bit.

01 / 06

Milled Steel Tooth Cutting Structure

Steel teeth are machined directly on the cone body, allowing aggressive cutting action in soft formations.

02 / 06

Fast Penetration in Soft Rock

Longer and more widely spaced teeth help achieve efficient penetration in soft shale, clay, sandstone and similar formations.

03 / 06

Three-Cone Rolling Action

Three independently rotating cones provide crushing, scraping and shearing action during rotary drilling.

04 / 06

Multiple IADC Options

Different IADC structures are available according to formation hardness and drillability.

05 / 06

Gauge Protection

Gauge protection and hardfacing can be added to help maintain borehole diameter and reduce outer-row wear.

06 / 06

Bearing Options

Different bearing and sealing structures can be selected according to drilling environment and application.

Applications & Formations

Used across water well, mining and construction drilling

Steel tooth tricone drill bits are suitable for water well drilling, mining drilling, geotechnical drilling and rotary drilling. Other applications include reverse circulation drilling, grouting and injection drilling, construction drilling, soft formation drilling and oil and gas drilling in suitable configurations.

01 Water Well Drilling Fast penetration for water well projects in soft to medium formations.	02 Mining Drilling Reliable drilling for mining and blast hole operations in soft rock.
03 Geotechnical Drilling Suited to geotechnical investigation and injection drilling projects.	04 Rotary Drilling General rotary drilling including reverse circulation applications.

Suitable Formations by IADC Code

IADC Code	Suitable Formations	WOB / RPM
116 / 117	Very soft formations with low compressive strength — soft shale, clay, salt rock, other very soft formations.	0.35–0.90 kN/mm / 180–80 rpm
126 / 127	Soft formations with low compressive strength — shale, clay, salt rock, soft limestone.	0.35–1.00 kN/mm / 180–80 rpm
136 / 137	Soft to medium-soft formations or soft formations with harder interbeds — anhydrite, soft limestone, sandstone, mixed soft formations.	0.35–1.05 kN/mm / 130–60 rpm
216 / 217	Soft to medium-soft formations with harder interlayers — anhydrite, soft limestone, sandstone, other mixed formations.	0.50–1.20 kN/mm / 100–50 rpm

⚠️ Note: The final IADC code and bit configuration should be selected according to formation hardness, abrasiveness, compressive strength and drilling parameters.

Cutting Structure

Milled steel tooth cutting structure

The cutting structure of a Steel Tooth Tricone Bit is different from a TCI bit. Instead of pressed carbide inserts, the teeth are machined from the cone steel itself. By changing tooth shape, spacing and exposure, the bit can be adapted to different soft rock and interbedded formations.

Long Teeth Designed for very soft formations where aggressive engagement is required.	Medium Tooth Profiles Suitable for soft-to-medium formations and interbedded conditions.	Tooth Spacing & Exposure Different spacing and exposure available according to formation characteristics.
Hardfacing on Teeth Hardfacing on tooth surfaces improves wear resistance in abrasive conditions.	Reinforced Gauge Rows Reinforced outer rows improve gauge holding capability and bit life.	Custom Tooth Design Tooth profile, spacing and exposure can be customized for specific formations.

Gauge & Wear Protection

Protect borehole gauge and extend bit life

Depending on the drilling application, different gauge and wear protection methods can be used to maintain borehole diameter, reduce outer-diameter wear and extend bit life.

Shirttail Hardfacing Applied to the shirttail to reduce wear in abrasive formations.	Gauge Hardfacing Hardfacing on gauge surfaces helps maintain borehole diameter.	Reinforced Heel Teeth Reinforced heel rows provide additional gauge protection during rotation.
Carbide-Enhanced Gauge Carbide-enhanced protection is available for abrasive formations.	Wear-Resistant Surface Treatment Surface treatments can be applied for additional wear resistance.	Application These features maintain borehole diameter, reduce wear and extend bit life.

Bearing Structure

Open, sealed and journal bearing options

Depending on bit size and application, different bearing configurations can be selected to match the drilling environment.

Open Bearing

Suitable for general rotary drilling and environments where simple structure and flushing are preferred.

Sealed Bearing

Helps protect the bearing system from abrasive drilling debris and contamination.

Journal Bearing

Available for selected heavy-duty configurations requiring improved load capacity.

Steel Tooth vs TCI

Which tricone bit should you choose?

Steel Tooth and TCI tricone bits are designed for different formations and drilling priorities. The correct choice depends on formation hardness, abrasiveness, penetration requirement and drilling economics.

Feature	Steel Tooth Tricone	TCI Tricone
Cutting Structure	Milled steel teeth	Tungsten carbide inserts
Main Formation	Soft to medium	Soft to hard / abrasive
Penetration	Very good in soft rock	Stable across wider formation range
Wear Resistance	Moderate	Higher
Typical Use	Soft shale, clay, sandstone	Limestone, dolomite, abrasive rock
Cost Position	Usually more economical	Higher-performance option

Choose Steel Tooth

Choose Steel Tooth when:

—	Formation is soft
—	High penetration rate is required
—	Abrasiveness is relatively low
—	Drilling economics are important

Choose TCI

Choose TCI when:

—	Formation is harder
—	Rock is abrasive
—	Longer wear life is required
—	Formation conditions vary significantly

FAQ

1
What is a Steel Tooth Tricone Drill Bit?
+

A Steel Tooth Tricone Drill Bit uses machined steel teeth on three rotating cones to crush, scrape and shear the formation during rotary drilling. It is commonly used in soft to medium formations where fast penetration is required.

2
What formations are Steel Tooth Tricone Bits suitable for?
+

They are mainly suitable for soft to medium formations, including soft shale, clay, salt rock, sandstone, soft limestone and formations with occasional harder interbeds.

3
How do I choose the correct IADC code?
+

The IADC code should be selected according to formation hardness, compressive strength, abrasiveness and drilling conditions. Common options for steel tooth tricone bits include IADC 116/117, 126/127, 136/137 and 216/217.

4
What is the difference between Steel Tooth and TCI Tricone Bits?
+

Steel tooth tricone bits use milled steel teeth and are generally preferred for softer, less abrasive formations. TCI tricone bits use tungsten carbide inserts and are better suited to harder or more abrasive formations.

5
Can you customize Steel Tooth Tricone Drill Bits?
+

Yes. We can customize bit diameter, IADC code, tooth profile, tooth spacing, gauge protection, bearing structure, sealing system, thread connection, hardfacing, product marking and packaging according to your drilling requirements.
