Diamond Reaming Shells

Diamond reaming shells are installed behind the core bit. Their main functions are to:

	Maintain the correct borehole diameter
Provide clearance for the core barrel
	Help stabilize the drilling string
	Reduce borehole deviation
Allow replacement core bits to pass smoothly

Diamond or PDC

Which core bit should you choose?

Hot-pressed diamond and PDC core bits are designed for different drilling conditions. Final bit selection should be based on rock hardness, abrasiveness, fracture conditions, drilling depth and drilling parameters.

Hot-Pressed Diamond

Hot-Pressed Diamond Core Bit

Suitable when:

—	Drilling abrasive formations
—	Long bit life is important
—	Continuous core drilling is required
—	Formation hardness varies

PDC

PDC Wireline Core Bit

Suitable when:

—	Fast penetration is required
—	Formation is suitable for shearing-type cutting
—	Lower-to-medium abrasiveness conditions
—	Efficient drilling and cutter durability required

⚠️ Note: Final bit selection should be based on rock hardness, abrasiveness, fracture conditions, drilling depth and drilling parameters.

Matrix Selection

Matrix selection for hot-pressed diamond core bits

The matrix hardness should be selected according to rock hardness and abrasiveness.

Soft Matrix

For Harder Formations

Recommended for harder formations where faster diamond exposure is required.

Medium Matrix

For General Drilling

Suitable for general exploration drilling and mixed formations.

Hard Matrix

For Softer or Abrasive

Recommended for softer or more abrasive formations where slower matrix wear is desirable.

Reaming Shell Advantages

Why use a diamond reaming shell?

Reaming shells are a key part of the wireline core drilling system. They help maintain borehole quality and protect downstream equipment.

Maintain Borehole Diameter Keeps the drilled hole at the required gauge.	Improve Drilling Stability Helps stabilize the core barrel and drilling assembly.
Reduce Hole Deviation Supports straighter drilling during deep exploration.	Protect Core Drilling Equipment Maintaining proper hole clearance helps reduce unnecessary friction around the core barrel.
